The STUN Cup being awarded for the first time in 2000 at Whirlpool GC in Niagara Falls, ON.
In 2007 the Cup travelled to St Andrews as seen here on the famous Swilcan bridge. While overseas the Cup also visited Royal Lytham St. Anne and Carnoustie.
There is some other tournament that happens in April. We travelled to Augusta in 2004 with the Cup to see what the big deal was. While there the Cup was dipped in Rae's Creek. They wouldn't let us get a picture of that though :(
In 2008 it was time for the STUN Cup to grow. For two years wood was collected from Stanley Thompson designed (or modified) golf courses to ever host a Canadian Open. That wood was then used to construct the base of the Cup. Each piece is identified by the course it came from and year(s) the Open was there.
Why Stanley Thompson? The STUN started at Whirlpool GC in Niagara Falls and is considered the Home of the STUN. As this course was designed by Stanley Thompson it only seemed approriate we pay homage to Canada's foremost golf architect whose courses have hosted over 50% of Canadian Open Championships. No small feat considering the CDN Open has been played since 1904. Some of his other famous courses include St Georges, Banff Springs, Jasper and Cape Breton Higlands just to name a few.
Staff at Mount Bruno GC just outisde of Montreal help us locate the perfect piece.
Well not quite. The Cup will be travelling to Oakdale GC in Toronto as that Thompson course will be hosting the Canadian Open for the first time in 2023. The only course remaining to be added other than Oakdale is Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg which hosted the Open in 1961. Anyone heading out that way??
This time it was California. Pictured here the Cup travelled to Torrey Pines in San Diego. Hillcrest and Riviera in Los Angeles were also on the list of courses visited that have hosted major tournaments. In the case of all three they were US Opens.
The Cup visited the PGA National, home to the PGA
4 PGA Championships, 2 Senior PGA Champsionships and a Ryder Cup make Valhalla a must stop on the STUN Cup tour.
When on the road, the Cup travels in a customized trunk designed specifcally to keep the Cup safe in transit.
